Cheng Hsu, PhD, Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who’s Who

Dr. Hsu’s patent, US 7177798 B2 (“Natural Language Interface Using Constrained Intermediate Dictionary of Results”) predated the creation of SIRI. In 2016, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Dynamic Advances, LLC settled with Apple, Inc., in a four year long lawsuit concerning the origins of SIRI (Civil Action No.: 1:13-CV-0633 (DEP) In the US District Court for the Northern District of New York). Apple agreed to license the technology and paid the plaintiffs satisfactory financial compensation in the settlement.

Drawing upon more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Hsu is a well-known expert in the areas of decision sciences and engineering systems. For more than two decades, Dr. Hsu has served the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a professor. Prior to pursuing a career in engineering, Dr. Hsu received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at Tunghai University in 1973. He went on to attend The Ohio State University, where he earned both a Master of Science degree in 1978 and a PhD in 1983.

During this time, Dr. Hsu served as a graduate research assistant and graduate teaching associate with the university. He initially joined Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1982 as an assistant professor, a position Dr. Hsu held for six years before taking on the role of associate professor in 1988. Since 1996, he has served as a professor with Rensselaer Polytechnic University.

Dr. Hsu holds several inventions as a recognized authority in engineering education. He has authored or co-authored over 100 scholarly papers and several texts in his areas of focus, including “Enterprise Integration and Modeling: the Metadatabase Approach,” “Service Enterprise Integration: An Enterprise Engineering Perspective,” “Service Science: Design for Scaling and Transformation,” and “Information Systems: The Connection of People And Resources For Innovation,” among others. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Hsu has received grants from a variety of sources, including the New York State Department of Transportation, U.S. Army, National Science Foundation, NATO, Samsung, IBM, GM, GE, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Aluminum Company of America.

In an effort to stay active and engaged among his professional circles, Dr. Hsu maintains involvement with the ACM, INFORMS and a number of other professional societies. Additionally, he is recognized as a senior member of the IEEE and Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and a former member of the board of directors with the North American Chinese Business Educators Association. He has been featured in a wide range of publications, including Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, and Who’s Who in the World.
