Says Andy Peykoff II, CEO of the bottler his father founded in 1963, “We’ve always maintained that nothing is more important than family. And we’ve come to define ‘family’ as our employees, their families and, even beyond, people in need in the communities where we operate our plants and where we do business.” The $1 million relief donation is the largest since Niagara established its charitable arm, Niagara Cares, in 2014. And the millions of bottles donated in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Mexico are among the largest among all U.S. bottlers.
In Texas, Niagara donated two million bottles of water throughout state relief agencies including Feed The Children, Convoy of Hope, the Houston Food Bank and local police and fire departments. In Florida, the company has donated over one million bottles so far and, says Peykoff, “we’ll continue supplying water as long as our partner agencies need it.” The company has donated hundreds of thousands of bottles of water to support the Caribbean and to Mexico City, with more on the way as sea and air transport become available.
“This has been a season of heartbreaking disasters,” Peykoff said. “We make a product that is essential to human life. We commit to doing our part – and more – to help.”
Niagara’s commitment to its communities was tested first when Harvey hit Texas, doing substantial damage in the towns of Seguin and Missouri City, Texas, where the company employs over 160 people. Several employees were stranded at their plant for a brief time; many others were forced to evacuate their homes, which saw extensive damage. “The good news,” Peykoff says, “is that everyone was safe and unharmed. So many of our team members acted heroically and selflessly to rescue, shelter and support their neighbors. I’m incredibly proud, but not at all surprised.”
But there is a tremendous work to do in recovery, and Niagara felt that its $1 million could do the most good by concentrating in these two cities. Anthony Snipes, City Manager of Missouri City said, “We’re incredibly grateful to Niagara. They are a great partner.”
