“Marlene Johnson was a vital part of the Events DC family who helped lead major development projects across our great city,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Marlene’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
During her tenure at Events DC, Marlene was instrumental in the development of the Washington, DC Marriott Marquis, the lease for Apple to open a global flagship store at the Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square, the development of the new Entertainment and Sports Arena and numerous other initiatives and programs for Events DC.
“We are deeply saddened by Marlene’s passing. The dedication she showed in her various positions within her years of service to the District of Columbia has left a profound legacy on our city and Events DC,” said Max Brown, chairman of the Board for Events DC. “As a respected leader, who lived a life full of distinction and unfeigned respect, she has left an indelible mark on Washington, DC and we are all the better for it.”
A native Washingtonian, Marlene’s various leadership roles encompass her more than 25 years of tireless service to the District, where her wit, wisdom, kindness, and passion will be forever remembered.
“As our General Counsel, Marlene was an incredible leader and no one contributed more to the growth, transformation and the success of our organization,” said Greg O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC. “Her impact to this city is immeasurable. As a loyal friend, mentor and role model, she touched so many people – we will all miss her terribly.”
Events DC extends its sincerest condolences to Marlene’s family and countless friends as we mourn her loss. Upon confirmed arrangements, we will share the details of a memorial service and donation fund in her memory.
