About Melvin LeRoy Strand
Dr. Melvin Strand has completed 40 years as a teacher of English at the secondary and collegiate levels. He earned two degrees from Minnesota State University, Mankato, a Master’s in English from Bemidji State University and an Ed.D in English education from the University of South Dakota.
His teaching experience started at Jefferson Junior High in Rockford, Illinois, before he went to Central Junior High in Rochester, Minnesota, and then for 20 years in the Richfield, MN, school district, where he served as chair of the English Department for many years. He was then employed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to teach English at King Saud University, Abha, Saudi Arabia, to young men who were learning English as part of their studies to become medical doctors. For seven of his ten years at the Saudi University, Dr. Strand was coordinator of the Medical English program. While in the Kingdom he was featured on a thirty minute kingdom wide “Guest of the Kingdom” telecast. He also wrote two texts to be used by Saudi students studying English. Before leaving the Kingdom, Dr. Strand worked as a teacher of English for the Arabian-American Oil Company and then for the Royal Saudi Navy.
Dr. Strand then joined the Program for Afloat College Education (PACE), teaching college English to sailors and marines on seven U.S. naval vessels at sea. This enabled ship’s personnel to work on college degrees while at sea. While on the ships he had the civilian rank equal to lieutenant colonel.
Before finishing his first college degree, Melvin enlisted in the United States Air Force. His service included top secret work in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East during the Cold War. When he returned to America he was stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. While in the Air Force he earned good conduct medals and a missile badge and received an honorable discharge.
Dr. Strand’s work has been recognized by inclusion in multiple editions of Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, and Who’s Who in the World.
