BAP1 Testing and Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Loss of BAP1 almost provides confirming diagnosis for malignant mesothelioma…

Doctors in Anhui, China say their new meta-analysis points to the importance of BAP1 testing for people with suspected malignant mesothelioma. Surviving Mesothelioma has the full story. Click here to read it now.

The researchers at the Second People’s Hospital of Hefei analyzed the data from 12 different studies of BAP1 in mesothelioma diagnosis. The studies included more than 1,800 mesothelioma patients. Their conclusion? BAP1 is an important diagnostic tool.

“Current meta-analysis indicates that detection of BAP1 by immunohistochemical testing is a useful diagnostic marker for malignant mesothelioma,” concludes lead researcher Li-Ming Wang. “Loss of BAP1 almost provides confirming diagnosis for malignant mesothelioma, while positive staining for BAP1 is not enough to exclude non-MM.”

According to a summary of the findings in the journal Oncotarget, BAP1 testing is more accurate when performed on people with the epithelioid form of malignant mesothelioma. It is also more effective when done in immunohistochemical rather than cytological tests.

“The more we learn about BAP1, the more it seems that this gene and the protein it produces have much to teach us about how to diagnose and potentially treat mesothelioma more effectively,” says Alex Strauss, Managing Editor for Surviving Mesothelioma.
